Protect the water heritage

The amount of sludge produced by industry in developed countries is currently very high and tends to increase, resulting mainly from the need to protect natural water resources from the pollutant load of liquid effluents.
In fact, there are several industrial sectors (domestic WWTP, tanneries, pulp and paper, textiles, agri-food, chemical industry, etc.) that are facing the challenge of managing a waste that is always associated with several problems.

The project and the team

This project focuses on the development and construction of a prototype sludge drying system, capable of drastically reducing its moisture content, up to around 20% if the application is for agricultural purposes, or up to 10% if the option is to energy recovery.
In the case of WWTP sludge, it is important to stress that, simultaneously with the reduction of humidity, it is sanitized, preserved organic matter and minimized the problems associated with bad odours.
In this way, transport costs are drastically reduced, allowing for an increase in storage capacity and providing greater flexibility in the overall management of sludge in terms of its final destination.

Drying system

The drying system developed is around 30% more economical in terms of investment cost, and has also the advantage of using, flexibly, renewable energies (biomass, dry sludge, biogas and other hot gases that may be available in the industrial process ).

The drying system is versatile to allow the use of additives to aid drying and minimize odors, being recommended for this purpose industrial residues currently sent to landfills (e.g. dregs of green liquor from the paper pulp industry).

Agronomic safety and efficacy trial

Agronomic trials were carried out in pots to study the performance of the application to the soil of different doses of thermally dry urban wastewater sludge (with and without adjuvant – green liquor dregs), on production and quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and the alterations of a soil poor in organic matter and nutrients. For comparative purposes, urban wastewater sludge, compost and organic nitrogen fertilizer available on the market were tested. The test took place in a greenhouse, with 3 lettuces per pot, over approximately 2 months. Four types of treatment were studied, based on the nitrogen incorporation rate of the respective fertilizer material: (T0) 0 kg N/ha (control), (T1) 85 kg N/ha, (T2) 170 kg N/ha and (T3) 255 kg N/ha, with the addition of an extra 40 kg of mineral nitrogen/ha to eliminate any deficits in this nutrient. Four replicates per treatment were performed and the experimental design was completely randomized. It was concluded that dry sludge is safe and efficient at the agronomic level, and can be commercialized and replace part of the nitrogen mineral fertilizer used in agriculture.
